The Week
The South Deadly Weather

These last few weeks has brought many devastating tornado's. North Carolina, Arkansas, Virginia, and recently Alabama to name a few. These tornadoes have gotten up to 210 mi and hr. winds wiping out miles and miles of homes the number of people killed and missing are still being counted. Living out in the country has made it become more real and made me more fearful because these past couple of weeks we have experienced a part of those storms. Now we are investing in a weather radio and going to prepare our storm cellar to be ready just in case.

Donald Trump: Is he really serious about running?

Many consider this as a publicity stunt even though Trump insists he is serious. By this article the Republicans would have to overlook his three marriages, his dubious claims to religious faith, and pro-life and they would never let it get that far.Trump maybe the "Gospel of Success", but I agree "this is mot a reality show. This is our country."

The Week
Gulf oil spill : Lessons learned and ignored

A year after one of the worlds biggest oil spills we are still wondering if this could happen again. Still a year passed and not a single law has been passed and not a single law has passed to make drilling safer. The world currently burns through 88.5 billion barrels of oil a day, and most is off shore and deep waters. I agree with Steve Levine in that instead of giving companies fines that they can afford we should make make them "company-ending" events. Becoming a new mother is making me become more aware and passionate about the environment and what i can do to help.

Being Pregnant

Over the past 7 months being pregnant has flown by and it has had its slow phases. School has helped pas the time, and after school i'll have a month and half till the big day. Being pregnant has deffinately made me more catious of what i eat, where i hang out, and the type of people i want my child to be surrounded by. Also me and my husband find ourselves discusssing on how were going to handle situations when and if they come about. We also hope and pray to set a good example for our child therefore making my husband and me take a look at our own lifes and make changes. We can't wait till he is here and were able to hold him and give him tons of love well we already love him.

Ed Rruscha : Road Tested
Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth

Ed Ruschas road trip went from Oklahoma to California along Route 66. He captures gas stations, the Hollywood billboard, and the strip along with others. He dedicated 40 years of work is in the Road Tested book. I liked his work because he has captured and documented how the original gas stations, and the Hollywood strip was and now we will never lose that .

Blind Dancers

This chapter is hard to explain and I don't fully understand it but ill try. The author talks about aesthetic experience. An aesthetic experience he relates to being closely related to death, life, and divinity. He also says some of us call it a religious experience. Also that its hard to explain because our verbal language is not designed to describe new experiences. An example would be, how would you explain color to someone that is blind?. In the authors experience of having an aesthetic experience he was at a museum at the Chicago Art Institute. He spent almost a whole day there looking at paintings as a well trained formalists analyzing each piece. The more his mind became fatigued the more he went until his mind was entirely fatigued. All his analysing had gone. Then he found himself standing in front of Rothkos art, he stood there as a passive viewer experiencing art visually and unconsciously. he literally felt the presence of God, although he is not or was a Christian. In this chapter I found that many experience this in different ways.

Records and Taxes

Artists should have a journal if not already a computer where they can put down and record tr heir work. Artist in the beginning may not have a lot to remember, but as you become more accomplished you will find it very important and useful in organizing your art information. This is a must in your own business to put down all works and when sold list the name and address of the buyer for later you may need to borrow your pieces for a gallery. This on file will also come in handy for a resume, your resume needs to be updated frequently. Also you will need to keep record of where your work has been or if you have received any awards, and reviews. Recording information as well as keeping a separate bank account for your business will save you valuable time away from your work and from getting in trouble with the IRS.

This video was about taking your talents and pursuing it to the fullest. It showed a culture that didn't have much but used dance as an outlet. Surrounded by violence, crimes, and gangs they created a group that comes together called Clowns. They show how they use dance to show their personal emotions (anger, depression, frustration....) rather than being involved in the violence and gangs. Through this they have become a family, and many more have formed throughout as a result. This video is inspiring in the fact that they chose their talent to their fullest to do good.

Working Spaces

As a young artist it is important to have your own work space close, even a space in your house. The further away it is the less likely you will visit or make the extra effort. Have your studio set in a place that can be there over a long period of time. In some cases you may try to build your own studio this is a waste of time away from your work instead transform a spare bedroom or a space in the garage. With lighting many of the galleries and museums use about 2900 kel. , but for the artist in their studio the normal halogens are affordable and sufficient. Having a loft is also looked on as the artist is serious about his work. A loft can be shared and have their works around on display. This space is also good for hosting parties further their recognition.

Jobs for young artists

Many young artists find themselves in need of another way to make money, and and that still allows them time to work on their artwork. Some artists make their way to New York,San Fransisco, or Los Angeles to be closer to galleries. Also they may start teaching at a college or university, this had an upside for the experience of being able to teach and be challenged with the constant questions that come from students. it may also have downside in that you may have little time for your own work. Some find jobs in galleries this is very valuable for your knowledge of art, and you meet dealers, costumers, and many important people.In the end the artist will need to be self-disciplined, work on their art work continuously, and be able to maintain good work habits.

All the Worlds a Canvas

Photographer JR travels all over manly in the poorer places of the world. He is a photographer as well as a graffiti artists. His work can be sen from rooftops and buildings. His intent is to capture that particular place and its way that the people want to convey a different image of themselves to the world. His people that help are not paid these people are friends and strangers, he feels that if he did pay them that it would only take away from the soul of the project.

Galleries, Portfolios, and Web Pages

As artists it is important to know and have a good understanding of galleries. Galleries want to see that the artists is serious and self-disciplined because most collectors will watch an artists up to 5 years to see if they will stick around, and be a good investment. Artists should also be involved in the art world and show interest as well as support to their fellow artists. When wanting to present your work to the dealers it is best for beginners with large works to set up a portfolio of color prints, but should be of best quality. For paintings it is best to represent them in a notebook. This is better than using slides although have slides with you. Also maintaining a web page of your work is good for inquirers and an introduction to your work, as well as to follow where your exhibits may be. This chapter encourages to always be prepared and have your portfolio handy at all times.

The Color Monster

Often times students tend to make up excuses as to why we are not advancing in our work. Excuses such as, I don't know enough about this or that so therefore it won't be as good. These excuses are a bad habit that we fall into and teachers try to help try to help us with this, but it is important we need change this way of thinking. As beginners we will learn from Munsell system, Lands theory, and all the great artist from the past to further our work and communicate to the audience. As young artists we should remember to seek our teachers for help, and the only way to learn is through trial and error.

Tradition and the New in Current Art

As artists we start with our own traditions that we have adapted over the years with but, we also encounter new experiences that give us new ideas. In this chapter it says,'If the ideas are there, technique will follow.' Although in having these new ideas it could takes years to master, its not something all of the sudden. Teachers should push the artist to practice strongly all the time to reach the artist goal. In practicing its still always good to listen to criticism and, not only to good praises. Listening only to the good praises can slow your progress down. Through criticism we will progress faster, along with practice.

Bridget Fleming from Australia moved to the Lower East Side, NY. She now captures people on two wheels riding down different streets, from behind. Although these people are apart of her props, she is capturing new York in a fun, and fresh new look. She is exposing a little glimpse of what makes up New York from different occupations to diversities. This is a very creative way to make the audience want to go there or get a taste of New York.

As an artist going to school we should soak up as much as we can. We can do this by being determined to learn even if we don't think what we need. It's also important for students to show interest in learning to their teachers. This inspires the teacher to more enthusiastic and wanting to teach, rather than become boring. In learning we should be able to take criticism it will only help us become more knowledgeable and better our abilities. Also its important for teachers to educate us in not just one aspect but to teach us multiple scenarios to help us not be illiterate to the art world As artists we need to learn everything we while we can in school, and encourage our teachers to share their knowledge.

J. Henry Fair: 'Abtraction of Detruction'

J. Henry Fair takes photographs of environmental pollution as abstract painting. He's able to take these pictured overhead in a plain or helicopter to get to these restricted areas. He captures these destruction's in a way that seems beautiful, he uses vibrant colors such as rust, greens, and blues. In these photographs he not only documenting whats really going on but he is trying to communicate to his audience through these vibrant colors to get our attention of the environment we all share.

Reading-and reading right

In this chapter it emphasized that reading is a very important tool toward your goal.It is important as an artist to read and be educated in the world of art not just the present but also the history leading up to now. Reading will form ideas and challenge us to become better. It will also expand our knowledge in understanding the artists that influence you, and for us to discuss art on a more higher intelligent level. Also in this chapter it discuses how we need to consistently be working on our art. It is good to not only work on one piece but maybe work on two or three to get our mind working unconsciously. It is important to keep on working even though we feel its not our best this will help us grow. Through reading and working consistently it will make us be the artist we want t be.

Talent, Intelligence, and Art
When reading this chapter I found that we should not judge or compare ourselfs to each others abilities. We can be strong in one area and someone else can be strong in another, this does not mean one is more intellegent than the other. As long as we apply ourselfs to our fullest and not stop when we think we may know it all. This process could take years, and it helps to be open minded in listening to teachers and their advice so it will help you grow. Also it helps not to think of the finished product but rather enjoy the experience of creating the piece of art. This chapter helped give me a new and fresh reminder in the process of learning and that I need to practice everyday at home and not just college.

Michael Miller's gallery I found it to be an exciting way to provide social and political comentary. I also liked the composition he used with layers of fabric and paint . He used cartoons, social figures, and trademarks that would recall thoughts and feelings. This gallery is one to see.

      His photos to me are classic and timeless.

     I have been a fan of hers for along time I love her creativity and new takes on newborns.

4. Robert Frank
     I like the way his photographs are realistic of the people in there everyday life. Also in the photographs it seems he captures the individual or individuals in their emotions at that moment.

Photography and, hopefully I'll be graduating in 2014.

3. Why did you choose a photography class (or photography as a major), and what do you hope to learn from school in general and this class specifically?

I chose photography as my major because I love taking pictures, but i want to know how to take them to make them better.

4. What are your goals after graduation? Please list your goals in reverse order, starting five years out, then three, two, one, and six months.
In five years i would liked to have graduated with photography, and work for myself while raising my kids. In four years have finished or be working on finishing graduating. Three years stay focused on graduating and maybe work part time with a professional photographer. Two years, try to balance school, raising a 1 yr old. In a yr working toward my photography goal. In six months I'll be feeding, changing diapers, and getting no sleep but all worth it.

5. What artists, musicians, photographers, writers, movies, books have influenced you/your work?
My favorite artist would be John Banovich

6. Where do you get information about current national and international events?
Online or T.V.

In the past year I went to the Bodies The Exhibition in Dallas.

This is a new experience for me and I am looking forward to it.

The value for the audience I think would be entertainment.

My passion is my husband and our new baby on the way.

Im afraid of snakes, so I'm always trying to be careful when I'm walking around the farm. One of the things that makes me uncomfortable probably is when I have to stand in front of a group by myself and talk.
